White Hall State Historic House

  • address 500 White Hall Shrine Road
    Richmond, KY 40475

Nestled in rolling farmland, the home near Richmond was built in the late 1700’s, with a major addition constructed in the 1860’s. Historic White Hall mansion, designed in Georgian and Italianate styles, boasts nearly 10,000 square feet with modern innovations of the time such as central heating and indoor plumbing.

Dating back to 1798, this site was the historic home to Cassius Clay. His father built the home and it is believed to be haunted by Clay himself, his wife and son. Witnesses have claimed to see moving candle lights, hear footsteps, and other mysterious noises, and even smells throughout the home. Piano and violin music has also been heard, and three ghostly apparitions have been spotted.

While most people associate ghostly activity with the dark hours, much of the spirit-like activity has been reported during the daytime, Of course, that may be because the daylight hours are when most people are around to observe the phenomena.

The historical residence is open for tours throughout the year for those who are interested in taking a look around for themselves.

White Hall is closed for the winter season, and does not reopen until April.

White Hall is managed by Eastern Kentucky University. For more information, call 859-623-9178.
